Brand Profile

Playtex was founded in the USA.  Not as a lingerie and corsetry company as one might expect, but as a manufacturer of vacuum sweepers.  Abraham Spanel created the company to sell a whole host of household products to women all over America, all using latex elements.  This included aprons, bathing caps, baby pants and girdles. In 1933 the company started selling a latex girdle which created the first ever comfortable corsetry for women.

By the war years, this technology had advanced and they were manufacturing the all new invisible Playtex girdle with latex on the outside and soft fabric inside.  They company was also supplying rubber boats and all manner of other equipment to the war efforts.

In the 1950s the company was the first ever to get permission to advertise womens underwear products on the television.  They managed to do this without ever showing a womans bust or a girdle.  Clever use of advertising meant that the campaign was hugely successful and the brand was assured a place in the hearts of women everywhere.  Very few women don’t know the company strapline “cross your heart with Playtex!”
